November 30- December 4, 2009

I hope everyone had a wonderful break. I enjoyed meeting so many grandparents and special friends on Grandparents' Day.

English- This week we will work on Unit 7 pages in the vocabulary book. Pages are due this Friday. Test will be next Friday, December 11. In the grammar book we will work on lessons 11-13. The quiz for these sections will be given on Tuesday, December 8.

Science- This week we will continue work on the Cell Booklet. The quiz on the 23 vocabulary words will be Thursday, December 3. The quiz on the parts of the cell will be Tuesday, December 8. There will be no big chapter test. Instead, I will pick up booklets and grade them for neatness and completion of content.

Homeroom- Don't forget that the collection of goods for our Service Project began today and will continue until Wednesday, December 9. Register and Hill are collecting cleaning/household products and Dupuy/Jones are collecting personal care items. For examples, please see previous post, the letter sent home, or contact the homeroom teacher. Thank you in advance for your generosity with this project.

Science Fun

I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter on Classification. We did several activities that I hope helped the students to remember some of the information. The first was a Classification of Me poster. These all turned out well. I chose a few to share with you.

Everyone also had the chance to create a new animal. These were great. I am in the process of grading them and will post a few pictures when they are done.

Stephen and Andrew Bienvenu got creative while studying for the test. Mom asked them to go into the yard and find examples of as many plants that we discussed as they could. After they were done studying, Mom made the examples they found into a beautiful arrangement for me. What a creative way to study.....they did well on the test and I got a beautiful surprise! Thanks boys (and Mom). =)

This Week

This is going to be a busy week. I am looking forward to meeting Grandparents on Friday and then a nice, relaxing week off! I know everyone is excited about that!

English- Tuesday is the quiz on lessons 8-10 from the verb chapter. We will spend the rest of the week working on some Thanksgiving poetry.

Science- Monday we began work on our next chapter, Cells. Everyone was given a Cell Booklet. This should be in class each day. We will work through the booklet together and have several small quizzes on the information. All students need to have 30 notecards for Wednesday. We will make flashcards for the vocabulary words. The quiz on these words is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1. I will let everyone know if that date changes.

The kids are all anxious for the fair! Just a reminder that we do have mass tomorrow. Please be generous with the Food Bank. Fair T-shirts may be worn with the mass uniform. If you did not purchase T-shirts, students may wear any appropriate red or blue T-shirt. Another option for 5th graders is to wear their orange spirit shirt. See you at the fair!!! =)

Fair Friday

Fair T-shirts were distributed today. Please check your order tonight. If you have any problems, contact Mrs. Mengis (her number is in the ABC's for this week). She will sell all extra T-shirts soon, so you must contact her ASAP if there is a problem with your order. Also, if you did not order and would like a shirt you should contact her. Extras will be sold on a first come, first served basis. All students may wear their Fair T-shirts on Friday. If you did not order a shirt, Mr. Bennett said a red or blue t-shirt (to represent SAS colors) would also be acceptable.

Halloween Stories

November 2- November 6, 2009

English- Halloween stories turned out well. The 5th graders had fun reading their stories to Mrs. Staid's 2nd grade class. This week we will work on present, past and future tense verbs (sections 5-7 in text). The quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10. All students have a brand new textbook. This must be covered by Monday and remain covered for the year. The old book may be kept at home to use as future reference in middle school. If you/your child do not wish to keep the text, please return it to me this week.
Vocabulary Unit 6 test is schedule for Friday, November 6, 2009.

Science-This week we will begin notes and discussion on Plant and Animal Kingdoms. We will, once again, make notecards in class. If you don't have any at home, please purchase a pack to have handy. The test for this last section is tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2009.

On Friday the students had a great time using the Scope on a Rope that was borrowed from LSU. Students were able to take an up close look at objects such as their skin, clothes, shoes, socks, hair, pencil bags, pencil tips, and yes....we even looked inside of ears and noses.
