Science- This week students will work with classmates to create presentations on disorders dealing with endocrine glands. They will have three full class periods to work on this before presenting to the class. The MAJORITY of the work should be done at school. Test on the endocrine system packet is Tuesday, February 14.

Homeroom FYI-
Class pictures Tuesday. Any students attending robotics workshop must be picked up and brought back to school by 9:30 for the picture. As soon as the picture is done, they may return to the workshop.

Friday we will have our class King Cake party. A big THANK YOU to Sarah Livingston, Linsey Sutton and Mary Christian for providing the cakes for the class. =)

HAPPY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK!

Science- This week we will begin our discussion of the endocrine system. The text book will not be used for the unit. I have not set a test date yet, but it will cover the whole packet as this is a fairly short unit. Homework each night is to review everything in the packet that has been done.

Religion- This week we will continue our discussion of the parts of the mass in Chapter 10- We Receive Holy Communion. We will also do an activity to celebrate Catholic Schools Week and create Valentine cards to send to the Veteran's retirement homes. We did this at Veteran's Day and had a great response from the facilities to which we mailed our cards.

Homeroom FYI:
On Friday we will celebrate class mass at 8:45 a.m. Parents are invited to attend.

Valentine's Day cards: I will allow time on Valentine's Day for the children to exchange cards. I ask that they bring one for each student in class (30) and that they only sign their name on the cards. It takes too long to hand out if cards are addressed to each student. If your child prefers to bring candy, that is fine, too. Just remember NO NUTS ALLOWED. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Science-
This week we will finish our study of Fighting Diseases. The test will be on the whole packet. Students have been given a test format/review sheet. This will be very helpful when studying. The test is now scheduled for Tuesday, January 24. Please note this change.

Religion-
This week we will continue our discussion of the parts of the mass. The focus this week is the readings through the general intercessions. We will also read our weekly Venture magazine.

Science-
This week we are getting back to our Daily Science packets. We will also continue working on Chapter 6-Fighting Disease. The test on this chapter will be given on Friday, January 20. Homework each night is to study all pages in the packet that have been corrected in class.

Religion-
This week we will talk about vocations and pray a special prayer for vocations. We will also begin Unit 2 in the text. Chapter 7, We Come Together to Celebrate, discusses the liturgical year and parts of the mass.

DARE Graduation will be help Wednesday, January 11 at 1 pm in the old gym. Please join us if you are able.

Science-
We are now working on the circulation packet. This packet will be split into two tests. The first test on sections 1 and 2 will be given on Friday, December 9. The second test on sections 3 and 4 will be given on Thursday, December 15. Homework each night is to study work that has been checked in the packet.

Everyone had a great time making edible cells. I will post a few pictures soon.

Religion-
We will study about Advent and Christmas and do different activities on each.

The purple folders are falling apart so I have asked all students to bring a binder for Religion
by December 16th. This binder may be 1/2 or 1 inch. I prefer a clear pocket on the front,
but if you already have one that doesn't have that it is fine.

Science-
Test on Cell packet Wednesday. We always end this unit with an edible cell project. My plans were to do this on Thursday. I just can't find it in me to "sugar" them up and send them off to take a Math test and Social Studies. Therefore, on Thursday they will get with their group and plan their shopping list. Each group member will be responsible for a few items to share so everyone doesn't have to purchase all of the materials. Shopping can be done over the holiday and we will do the project on the Wednesday after the holidays.

Religion-
This week we will work on Grandparent's Day gifts and a Thanksgiving craft for the family.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving break. I am most thankful this year to have such wonderful children to work with each day. =)

This week we will finish up notes in the cell packet. Test on these notes is scheduled for Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Vocabulary and labeling parts of the cell will not be tested again. This week we will learn about Veteran's Day and make thank you cards to mail to our Veterans.

Science-

All students have 23 vocabulary words in their packet and notecards to study from. This is our last time to create notecards in class. If this method of study has worked well for your child, I encourage them all to continue creating them at home. A quiz on the 23 vocabulary words will be given on Thursday, November 3. Format will be fill in the blanks with a word bank.

On Monday, students will draw and discuss the plant and animal cell. They will draw it in their packet and will be given a worksheet with both images. A short quiz on the parts of the plant and animal cell will be given on Friday, November 4.

Religion-

We will finish Saints posters, share them with the class and continue our study of All Saints Day.

New Animal Creations

Students finished up our Classification unit with a project asking them to create a new animal that had one characteristic from each class of vertebrates. I was impressed with their creativity. Here are just a few examples.

Science- This week is a light work week in Science. Monday students will share their new animal creations with classmates and get the packet for the next unit ready. We will not start on this packet until next Monday. Tuesday is D.A.R.E. and Wednesday we will visit the Science Lab for a little experiment. No tests or STPs this week.

Religion- This week we will continue working on the mysteries of the rosary. Students will have a short quiz on Thursday that will require them to put the mysteries in order. Helpful phrases are being learned in class to help with this quiz.

Science- I hope that everyone who was able to attend Science Night had as much fun as I did. Dr. Kaboom was awesome...JA!

This week we are working on the Plant and Animal kingdoms. On Thursday, all students need 40 notecards in class. We will make our last set of flashcards in class that day. Next week we will work on a project that uses information from the animal kingdom. Test is tentatively set for Friday, October 14.

Religion-
This week we will finish our overview on Sacraments. Students will have graded 1st 9 weeks folders returned to them.

Science-
This week we are finishing Archaebacteria and Eubacteria. Test on these two kingdoms is on Wednesday. Thursday we will start working on the last two kingdoms and Friday we will complete our monthly skill builder exercise.

Last Friday students enjoyed and experiment that demonstrated what happens in our stomach when we eat. This went along with one of our Daily Science weekly questions....What happens when you swallow gum?

Religion- This week we are working on the Sacrament of Eucharist.

Welcome to 5th grade. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you at Open House on Sunday. My goal is to update this site on Sunday or Monday afternoon each week. Please stop by often for an overview of the coming week.

Science- This week we will continue our review of World Geography. The test on this packet will be given on Friday, August 19. Your child should have study information on the back of the front cover of their packet by Monday night. There are several pages in the packet being used to help review topics and will not be included on the test. If you have any questions, please send me an email.

Religion- This week we will discuss the Assumption, how to help build God's kingdom and write a few prayers. We will also begin our personal prayer journals. This will be done once a week.

Welcome Back! I hope you all had a restful break. Can you believe May is here?!

Science- For this last chapter in the book (chapter 4) we will do things a little differently. We will read and discuss each section together in class. The students will then complete a short open book quiz in class. We will have 5 small, open book quizzes. So, NO MORE STUDYING AT HOME!!!! =)

English- We have finished our Grammar book. This week we will work on poetry. We will do a few in class activites, but there will be no test. After we finish poetry we will begin studying A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Shakespeare era. There will be a few notes and a quiz on this. More on that as we work through that Unit.

English- The test on the Adverb unit has been moved from Friday, April 15 to Tuesday, April 19. Many students are having trouble with this section already. We will continue working on it at school, but please check in with your child and see if they need some extra help at home. Sayings and Phrases project will still be due on Monday, April 18. Science- Instead of one test on the whole packet as stated in a previous post, we will have two smaller tests. The first one will cover sections 1-3 and will be given on Friday, April 15. Science- The next chapter will be Ch. 5 Seed Plants. We will begin our work on this packet on Tuesday. Homework each night is to study what has been checked in the packet so far. STPs will go home Tuesday and are due by Thursday.

English- This week we will start the Pronoun chapter in the text book. The test on this is scheduled for Friday, March 25. We will also continue work on the Sayings and Phrases project. Students will be given their folders on Monday. Each day we will work on one saying/phrase. Homework each night is to finish the page for that day.

Thursday is St. Patrick's Day accessory day.

Friday is an all school mass. Please remember mass uniform and to support the Food Bank, if possible.

Rough drafts of research papers will be sent home on Tuesday. Students are to type or neatly handwrite the final draft. Final draft is due by Friday, March 4. Please refer to the rubric for format information. Please remember that I have made many corrections/suggestions on rough drafts. Please do not persuade your child to make any major changes in the final draft. Points will be deducted if this happens.

This week we will work on the Plants packet. The test for this packet will cover the whole packet rather than being broken down into two tests. Students will receive a more detailed than usual test format later this week. I am also giving "hints" while checking in class. Homework each night is to study! The Endocrine System test will no go home with STP's tomorrow as I still have two people who need to make it up. I will send it home as soon as I can.

English-
Spiral #16 is due Friday. PLEASE check you child's work before they turn it in. Recent scores indicate that they are not coming to you....so please ask them about it!
Tuesday and Wednesday we will work on the last two rough draft paragraphs for the research paper. Rough draft will come home at the end of the week to by typed or neatly handwritten. Please DO NOT change anything in your child's paper. I know the work might not be up to your standards, but please remember this is the first time they have done this. I have made corrections/suggestions on all rough drafts. These are the only changes that should be made on the final draft. Please e-mail me if you have any questions about this.

On Monday students will present their group projects that they worked so hard on last week. Any groups that don't go on Monday will go Tuesday. Tuesday will also be test review day. The test on Endocrine System packet and project handouts will be on Wednesday. Thursday we will begin the next chapter on Plants.

Students have been working hard on rough drafts of reserach paper paragraphs. This week we will focus on getting all 6 rough drafts completed and turned in. I will proofread ALL paragraphs with students before work is sent home to be typed for the final draft to be turned in. Tentative due date for final draft is February 25.

English- This week students will take information gathered so far and begin writing research paper rough draft. All work will be done in class. Students will work on Wordly Wise when done each day. The Unit is due at the end of the week. Spiral # 15 is due Friday.

Science- The test on the Endocrine System notes is Wednesday, February 16. The 13 vocab. words will be matching and the labeling section comes from the Location, Location, Location worksheet in the packet. The 18 multiple choice will come from notes and presentations.

This week students will begin work on group projects/presentations. Each student will be given the opportunity to choose their groupmates. Each group will be given a disorder dealing with a gland of the Endocrine System. Students have a handout guiding them as to what infomation needs to be included in the presentation. Students will have Tuesday-Friday in class to work on this project. This should not require meetings at home or stress for parents!! As 5th graders, we are looking for the most basic information about the disorder. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Science- This week we will review for our Fighting Diseases test on Wednesday. After the test, we will begin a short unit on the Endorcrine System. An extra credit opportunity was handed out on Friday and is due on Wednesday. Packets are also due on Wednesday.

English- This week we will finish Unit 5. The test will be given on Friday. There is no spiral due this week.

We are also starting our Research Papers today. Students were given their red folder and assigned a state today. Homework for tonight is to have parents read the letter at the front of the folder and get a signature. This is due Tuesday. Red folders will reside at school once this is done. Students were also given directions to finding their online source. All students should find this article and have it printed and at school by Thursday. No written work will be done this week. By Friday all students will have a signed letter, a book on their state (from school library), and their online source printed and at school. We will begin using all of this information next week. This will be a long process. Please let me know if you have any questions.

As we work and check the last two sections, students should begin studying those. Please do not wait until the last minute. The test on sections 3-5 will be given on Wednesday, January 26. English- This week we will continue working through the Mechanics unit in the book. We will finis the Unit next week and the test will be given on Friday, January 28. Spiral #13 is due this Friday.

Uniform reminders

Just a reminder that students are not allowed to wear any fleece, jacket, coat, etc. with logos (other than the SAS logo) or name brands on them. All coats, jackets, fleeces, etc. must be NAVY blue. Students will be given a pink slip each time they wear inappropriate jackets to school. They will be asked to remove them in the classroom and will only be able to wear at recess. Remember, 4 pink slips in a week or 8 in a month equal a referral. That can add up quickly with the cold weather we have been having!

English Assignment

Yesterday my English class began a writing assignment using the Criterion Writing program. Most students were able to complete their first draft in class. Students are allowed to continue making revisions to perfect their work. Students are given 4 submssions. Their final draft is due by 8:30 am on Wednesday, January 19. I expect all students to use all four submissions. If there are computer issues at home, please try to make arrangements for your child to arrive at school early one morning so they may use the library computers. If this is not possible, please let me know so that I can make special arrangements with the library for recess access (we only have 2 days a week that students are allowed to go at recess). Thanks to those who have kept her so far, especially the Johnsons who had her for the whole Christmas break. She loves visiting and is getting quite spoiled!

Children's Liturgy

Two voulnteers are needed for Children's Liturgy this Sunday at 11 a.m. mass. Volunteers will either read or be the cross bearer. Each year we are asked to complete a service project as a grade. This year the 5th grade is collecting gently used children's books. The books collected will be distributed to local schools that are not able to afford new books. Collection of books will take place all week.

What a busy week we had last week! Everyone enjoyed our edible cell project! The Barber of Seville on Friday was wonderful. A big THANK YOU to Ms. Beth for planning that trip for us. Unfortunately, in my efforts to get there on time, I forgot the camera at school! And, I'm sure many of you have heard about our new classmate......On Friday our new class pet arrived. She is an adorable bunny that we will name this week. Pictures and updates to come!

Now, on to this week.....

English- We will work on the next few sections in the Verb chapter. Work will also continue on our Thanksgiving writing assignment. Spiral #10 is due on Friday.

Science- I was lucky enough to get a class subscription to Super Science magazine. Several issues came in at once, and we will read the articles and do some work on the topics. Once the initial issues are read, we will do this once a month as the new issues arrive. We will also begin on our next packet.

I can't wait to meet all of the Grandparents and Special Friends on Friday!

Monday we will start our next packet on Cells. Homework each night is to study what is in the packet so far. The first quiz will cover the 23 vocabulary words. It will likely be given on Friday the 22nd or Tuesday the 26th. I will post as soon as it is decided.
I will no longer require that notecards be completed in class. Students have learned how to use the packet to create the cards. If this is a good way for your child to study, the cards should be done at home. It is a good idea to create the notecards each night for the information written that day in class.

English-
****All 5th grade students have an online writing assignment that MUST be completed before they go to bed on Tuesday. This assignment requires use of the internet. If this is an issue at your home for any reason, please let me know ASAP so that we can make arrangements at school for them to complete the assignment.****

Quiz on Verbs sections 1-2 (action verbs and direct objects)) is Tuesday. Quiz on Verbs sections 3-4 (helping and linking verbs) is on Friday. Spiral #5 will be given on Monday and due on Friday. Spiral #4 was not so great for many students. Please check over your child's spiral before they turn it in.

Science-
Students made Plant Kingdom notecards last week. This week we will make our Plant tree map, take notes on the Animal Kingdom, create Animal Kingdom notecards, and begin work on an Animal Kingdom project. Today a letter was sent home explaining a new program that is being used Diocese wide. Students were shown how to log-on to the Criterion Writing website and find the first assignment. The letter states that it is due by Wednesday, but this assignment is coming from the Catholic Schools Office and we do not know at what time on Wednesday the assignment will be closed. So far we have completed the first four sections in Unit 1. The Unit 1 test will be on Thursday, September 2. The test format, which tells you and your child what they will be expected to do on the test, is in yellow English folders today.

Worksheets- After the class has worked and checked the information in the text, a WB page is assigned. Students may always come to me for help if they still aren't "getting it". These WB pages are turned in for a grade. Once they are graded, I hand them back and ask students to place them in their yellow English folder. They should remain in this folder so you always know where to look when studying. Please ask your child to show you their graded pages.

When studying for the test, please focus on simple subjects and simple predicates.

I want to take a moment to make my Science assignment clear. When notecards are assigned as homework, they should come to school BLANK. The making of notecards is an in class assignment and all students should be working on that assignment in class. If a student comes to school with the information already on the cards, they will be made to re-do the work in class.
Please do not encourage/allow your child to work ahead of the class. This is not acceptable.

Any pictures being used for the collage should be in class on Tuesday. After the writing assignment is complete, we will begin work in the English textbook. We will begin with types of sentences.
